Ava Luna’s celebrates the release of their sixth LP. The new self-titled album is a testament to almost twenty years of shared musical sensibility, now distilled into its barest elements. The album paints an intimate, exaggerated portrait of NYC, a cacophony of jagged post-punk, funk, and dance beats giving way to lush strings and spacious minimalism. It’s a sound that is both resilient and reflective, proving that even as the city and the band evolve, Ava Luna continue to take listeners somewhere urgent and new.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
At the heart of the album is the rhythmic interplay between Julian’s drums and Ethan’s bass, forming a “close to the earth, melting into the sidewalk” foundation. This deliberate focus on the rhythm section ensures that the songs can stand strongly in their most stripped-down format before any additional layers are introduced. At the same time, Carlos and Felicia deliver a meticulous and thoughtful style of vocal interplay that moves beyond traditional lead and backup roles. Their voices dance, weave, and harmonize, often blending into a singular, almost supernatural entity.
An extended lineup for the album release celebration at National Sawdust brings the recorded arrangements to life.
Ava Luna is out October 3rd on Western Vinyl.
This is a standing room-only performance. If you require accessibility accommodations, please email boxoffice@nationalsawdust.org.
ABOUT AVA LUNA
Ava Luna is Carlos Hernandez, Felicia Douglass, Julian Fader and Ethan Bassford. Called at various times “quirky and confident, mysterious and compelling” (The Village Voice), “post-soul…pulsating from one energy to another, suggesting art project and ritual” (New York Times), and “located somewhere between the control of modern R&B and the staccato angles of the art punk scene” (NME), the band has defied categorization through many changes in lineup and genre experiments through five full-length LPs. The common thread is fun hooky melodies, angular textures, infectious grooves, unexpected forms, and intimate worldbuilding. Since the late 2000s, Ava Luna has been a staple in NYC’s DIY music scene, and has built a reputation for exhilarating live shows, even as the quartet individually stay active as prolific producers, collaborators (YATTA, Helado Negro, Dirty Projectors, Youbet, Toro Y Moi, Tony Seltzer, Juan Wauters, Benét, Palehound, to name a few), educators, and performers in their own right.
