Mr. Goodyear was inspired to write this work especially for the extraordinary musicianship and virtuosity of Miranda Cuckson, and together they bring a collection of pieces that pay homage to the salon pieces of the 19th century but in the lens and soundtrack of the 21st. As part of the National Sawdust program Measha and Aaron will perform “Zombie Blizzard”, a new song cycle that Aaron composed, setting Margaret Atwood’s poems to music. “Zombie Blizzard” has a unique blending of the classical concert aria and jazz-influenced art song where Atwood’s lyrics tackle issues of sexism, humour, gender inequality, and grief.

Brazilian drummer and composer Alex Kautz will celebrate the release of his new album “Where We Begin,” a project that represents unity between different cultures. Drawing from their NPR Album Of the Year Transylvanian Folk Songs featuring legendary reeds-man John Surman and their new ECM duo release Transylvanian Dance pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri will reimagine through improvisation the Béla Bartók Field Recordings of folk songs from Transylvania using the unique acoustic possibilities of the National Sawdust space to bring back to life century old songs using live performance, audio from the original Edison wax cylinder recordings, rare handwritten manuscripts and photographs taken by Bartók himself in his field trips.
