After spending the majority of his adult life thus far in New York, Juan Wauters decides to revisit his native Montevideo, the culturally rich capital of Uruguay. Wauters explored the excitement of falling back in love with his birthplace on his subsequent record, 2023’s Wandering Rebel, but on his seventh studio album MVD LUV — due June 27 via Captured Tracks — Wauters doesn’t just introduce listeners to Montevideo; he invites them to feel at home within it. Having spent much of his career in the United States, Wauters has long carried the dual identity of immigrant and native son. Kronos Quartet reunites with Jeffrey Zeigler for a one-night only performance at National Sawdust, dedicated to compositions that "Awaken the Future." The evening includes a world premiere by 2019 Hildegard Commission Winner and composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and features a sound sculpture by Roxanne Nesbitt. Former quartet member and acclaimed cellist Jeffrey Zeigler will perform with Kronos, reuniting with the contemporary music champions for the first time in more than ten years. “Ko te reo Māori, he matapihi ki te ao Māori” goes the Māori whakatauki (proverb) that has guided Aotearoa singer/songwriter Marlon Williams’(Kāi Tahu, Ngāi Tai) fourth solo album, Te Whare Tīwekaweka. Translated, it means “The Māori language is a window to the Māori world” and expresses Marlon’s motivation behind his first te reo Māori album. “Through the process of constructing these songs,” Marlon says, “I’ve found a means of expressing my joys, sorrows and humour in a way that feels both distinctly new yet also connects me to my tīpuna [ancestors] and my whenua [land, home].”

Drawing from their NPR Album Of the Year Transylvanian Folk Songs featuring legendary reeds-man John Surman and their new ECM duo release Transylvanian Dance pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri will reimagine through improvisation the Béla Bartók Field Recordings of folk songs from Transylvania using the unique acoustic possibilities of the National Sawdust space to bring back to life century old songs using live performance, audio from the original Edison wax cylinder recordings, rare handwritten manuscripts and photographs taken by Bartók himself in his field trips. First Sounds is the debut album of the new, neoclassical group hailing from Montreal, consisting of violinist Sarah Neufeld, multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry and cellist Rebecca Foon. We Were Fridays follows a story that began in the Griot tradition of West Africa, travels to South Carolina by way of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, then north by way of the Great Migration, and then continues through Vietnam and Japan. Through deep investigation and collaboration, the team led by Zeigler explores the music of the Gullah community of the Low Country of South Carolina, a community which to this day has preserved more of their West African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African American community in the United States.

BMP: NEXTGEN 3 showcases the most innovative work from future industry innovators. These ten up-and-coming composers--selected from a pool of over 140 applicants--write in a dazzling array of musical styles. This concert will feature one piece from each composer, and will be adjudicated by a panel of industry experts. Following this concert, two finalists will be chosen and commissioned to compose a 30 min vocal-theatre work. Ultimately, one of these finalists will be selected for a full evening-length commission.
