Kronos Quartet reunites with Jeffrey Zeigler for a one-night only performance at National Sawdust, dedicated to compositions that "Awaken the Future." The evening includes a world premiere by 2019 Hildegard Commission Winner and composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and features a sound sculpture by Roxanne Nesbitt. Former quartet member and acclaimed cellist Jeffrey Zeigler will perform with Kronos, reuniting with the contemporary music champions for the first time in more than ten years. The program also explores the fantastical worlds of Kronos' friends Nicole Lizée, Peni Candra Rini, and Gabriella Smith. Smith's epic work "Keep Going" highlights the issues surrounding climate change, and celebrates those individuals who keep fighting for solutions and for our future.

“Ko te reo Māori, he matapihi ki te ao Māori” goes the Māori whakatauki (proverb) that has guided Aotearoa singer/songwriter Marlon Williams’(Kāi Tahu, Ngāi Tai) fourth solo album, Te Whare Tīwekaweka. Translated, it means “The Māori language is a window to the Māori world” and expresses Marlon’s motivation behind his first te reo Māori album. “Through the process of constructing these songs,” Marlon says, “I’ve found a means of expressing my joys, sorrows and humour in a way that feels both distinctly new yet also connects me to my tīpuna [ancestors] and my whenua [land, home].”

We Were Fridays follows a story that began in the Griot tradition of West Africa, travels to South Carolina by way of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, then north by way of the Great Migration, and then continues through Vietnam and Japan. Through deep investigation and collaboration, the team led by Zeigler explores the music of the Gullah community of the Low Country of South Carolina, a community which to this day has preserved more of their West African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African American community in the United States.

As part of the National Sawdust program Measha and Aaron will perform the American premiere of “Zombie Blizzard”, a new song cycle that Aaron composed, setting Margaret Atwood’s poems to music. “Zombie Blizzard” has a unique blending of the classical concert aria and jazz-influenced art song where Atwood’s lyrics tackle issues of sexism, humour, gender inequality, and grief.

Miranda Cuckson and Stewart Goodyear perform the latter's latest composition for violin and piano. Mr. Goodyear was inspired to write this work especially for the extraordinary musicianship and virtuosity of Miranda Cuckson, and together they bring a collection of pieces that pay homage to the salon pieces of the 19th century but in the lens and soundtrack of the 21st. Calypso, reggae and rock shake hands with romances, waltzes, polkas, and fantasias.

The evening, hosted by Paola Prestini, builds a live approach to these photographs with a creative team and artists who will bring these photographs from the book to life, again. Featuring lighting design from Bruce Steinberg, and projection design of Jill's photographs by Camilla Tassi, these memories once captured through Jill's eye will be reborn via projected imagery in harmony with special performances - performances will include Sister Sylvester / Kathryn Hamilton, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Delfeayo Marsalis, Brandon Maddox and Kevin Newbury, Rinde Eckert, Magos Herrera, Alicia Hall Moran, Jeffrey Zeigler, and Brooklyn Rider. In addition to the release of this book and the moving tributes from these artists, we will also be celebrating Jill's milestone 75th birthday; making this a night to toast the enduring legacy and creative footprint Jill has bestowed upon us all.
